How do University of Maryland and Wake Forest compare on need-based financial aid?

I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Maryland and Wake Forest, and financial aid will be a major factor in my choice. I want to understand which school generally provides more generous need-based aid for students with similar financial circumstances.

For students with comparable demonstrated financial need, Wake Forest is typically more generous with need-based institutional aid than the University of Maryland.

The important exception is that Maryland can cost far less for Maryland residents because of its in-state public tuition. A resident whose family does not qualify for much need-based aid could therefore see Maryland as the less expensive option even without a larger aid package.

For out-of-state students, Wake Forest’s stronger institutional resources and full-need policy often make it the more promising school for need-based support, despite its much higher published price.

Compare the actual net price offers rather than the grant totals alone. Look at the remaining family contribution, whether loans are included, work-study expectations, renewable scholarship terms, and whether either college’s package relies on aid that could change after the first year.
