Academically, both can prepare you well through biological sciences, bioengineering-related coursework, laboratory research, and internships. UCSD has particularly deep visibility in biology, bioengineering, genomics, neuroscience, and marine and environmental biosciences, with a research-intensive campus culture. Its quarter calendar moves quickly, which can be exciting but demands strong time management.

Maryland is a strong choice for students drawn to biomedical research, public health, regulatory science, government-funded science, or D.C.-area internships. Its semester structure may also make it easier to settle into demanding lab courses and research commitments. For either school, joining a lab early and pursuing summer research or industry internships will matter more than the exact major title.

For biotechnology aimed at private-sector industry, startup exposure, and a dense local biotech ecosystem, UC San Diego has the clearer edge. Maryland may be the more compelling option if you are especially interested in NIH/FDA-adjacent research, policy, or the Maryland–D.C. biomedical network.
