Cornell vs. Georgetown: Which University Has Better Pre-Law Advising?

Georgetown has the clearer advantage for a student who wants pre-law advising closely connected to Washington, D.C. internships and a large day-to-day legal and policy ecosystem. Georgetown is especially appealing for students drawn to public policy, government, international affairs, or public-interest law.

A Cornell student can build an excellent law-school profile, particularly through rigorous academics, faculty relationships, undergraduate research, and opportunities such as the Cornell in Washington program. The environment is more campus-centered, though, so finding legal experience during the academic year may require more initiative than it would in D.C.

For a highly independent student who values Cornell’s academic breadth and wants to pursue law without making it the center of every semester, Cornell can be an excellent setting. Students should not choose a college solely for pre-law advising: law schools care most about a strong GPA, LSAT performance, meaningful experiences, and persuasive recommendations, and neither university requires a specific “pre-law” major.

Cornell may fit better when its particular academic programs, campus culture, or financial package are substantially more compelling.
