How do Duke and Vanderbilt compare for undergraduate education majors?

Vanderbilt offers the more complete undergraduate route for a student whose primary goal is to become a licensed K–12 teacher. Its Peabody College has dedicated undergraduate majors in areas such as elementary, secondary, and special education, with coursework and supervised field experiences designed around teacher preparation. Duke has valuable education coursework, but it does not offer the same breadth of undergraduate education majors or a comparably comprehensive teacher-training school.

Duke is more compelling for someone who wants to major in a traditional academic discipline while studying education as a secondary interest. Its Program in Education offers undergraduate study of education, policy, and inequality, and DukeTeach provides a focused pathway for students interested in secondary STEM teaching. That can be an excellent foundation for a student considering teaching, education policy, or graduate school, but it is narrower than Peabody’s preparation across grade levels and teaching specialties.

The campus environments also differ in ways that matter for this decision. Peabody makes education a visible, central part of Vanderbilt’s undergraduate community, so future teachers regularly study alongside peers pursuing similar classroom careers. At Duke, education is more interdisciplinary and less central to the overall undergraduate structure.
