Is Duke or NC State better for nursing?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that neither Duke nor NC State offers a traditional four-year, entry-to-practice BSN for a student starting directly from high school. Duke has a highly regarded School of Nursing, but its Accelerated BSN is designed for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed the required science prerequisites. NC State can provide solid pre-health and science preparation, but it does not have a standard prelicensure nursing major either.

At Duke, you could earn an undergraduate degree in a field such as biology, psychology, or public policy, complete nursing prerequisites, and then apply to an accelerated BSN program after graduation. Duke’s nursing school offers strong clinical, research, and graduate-level opportunities, but this route means paying for and completing two separate programs before becoming an RN.

At NC State, you could similarly major in a science-related field, complete prerequisites, and apply to an accelerated BSN elsewhere after earning your degree.

For the most direct preparation to become a registered nurse, neither is the ideal choice compared with a university that admits first-year students directly to a BSN program. Between these two, Duke is stronger specifically in nursing education because it has its own nursing school and accelerated BSN pathway, but NC State may be the more practical undergraduate choice if cost matters and you plan to pursue nursing school after college.
