How do you ask a teacher for a strong letter of recommendation for college?

I’m a junior getting ready for college applications, and I know I’ll need recommendation letters soon. I have a couple teachers I liked, but I feel awkward asking and I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say.

I want to know the best way to ask so I come across as respectful and organized, and so the teacher has what they need to write a strong letter.

Ask early, ask politely, and make it easy for the teacher to say yes.

The best wording is direct: “Would you feel comfortable writing me a strong letter of recommendation for college?” The word strong matters because it gives them room to decline if they do not feel they know you well enough.

Ask in person if possible, or by email if needed. Choose teachers from core academic subjects who know your work, participation, growth, or character well, not just the class where you got the highest grade.

When they agree, follow up with a short packet of information. Include your resume or activity list, a list of colleges if you have one, deadlines, what you enjoyed or learned in their class, and specific things you hope they might mention, such as a research project, class discussion habits, leadership, persistence, or improvement.

You can also add a brief “brag sheet” with your goals, intended major if you have one, and anything important from junior year. Keep it organized and concise so they do not have to dig for details.

Give them plenty of time, and more if your school starts requests early. Afterward, send a thank-you message, and once decisions come out, it is a nice touch to let them know where you ended up.

One small thing that helps a lot: if you can, ask before the end of junior year or very early in senior fall. Teachers often get flooded with requests, and earlier students usually get more thoughtful letters.
