For someone intending to launch in Houston soon after graduation, Rice makes it easier to build local relationships during college through internships, mentors, alumni, and events.

Rice has particularly relevant infrastructure for technology and healthcare entrepreneurship. The Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, and OwlSpark provide venture education, mentoring, pitch opportunities, and connections to founders and investors. Its proximity to the Texas Medical Center is a major advantage for healthcare-focused students: clinical collaborators, researchers, hospitals, and biotech activity are part of the surrounding ecosystem rather than an occasional trip away.

UT Austin has excellent options of its own, including the Herb Kelleher Entrepreneurship Center, Texas Venture Labs, and a deep network of founders, venture capital, and technology companies in Austin. UT’s alumni base can create more startup peers and more varied opportunities, and its technology ecosystem is especially valuable for software, consumer tech, and venture-backed startups. The drawback for a Houston-bound founder is that many of the relationships you build most naturally will be in Austin, so establishing a Houston network may require more deliberate effort.
