Which offers better access to Washington, DC internships: UT Austin or UVA?

The biggest practical difference is proximity versus a structured pipeline: UVA is close enough to Washington, DC for networking trips and occasional in-person events, while UT Austin is far away but offers the Archer Fellowship Program, a well-established UT System route for spending a semester interning in DC.

UVA has especially strong connections in the Mid-Atlantic and Washington professional communities, including government, policy, law, consulting, media, and nonprofit work. Its alumni base is visible in DC, and being in Virginia makes it easier to attend employer information sessions, alumni events, and interviews before securing a position. For a summer internship, either school can work well, since students can simply live in DC for the summer.

UT Austin should not be discounted for DC-oriented students. The Archer Fellowship Program pairs a semester in Washington with an internship and academic coursework, creating a clear, supported path that can be more useful than proximity alone. UT’s large alumni network is particularly influential in Texas, business, technology, public policy, and government, though it is less geographically concentrated around DC than UVA’s.
