Is UT Austin or Georgia Tech harder to get into for computer science?

UT Austin is often the more difficult computer science admit for Texas residents because admission to the university and placement into CS are separate hurdles. CS is one of UT’s most capacity-constrained and sought-after majors.

Georgia Tech is also exceptionally selective, particularly for applicants applying from outside Georgia, but it does not operate like UT Austin’s major-placement process. First-year applicants indicate an intended major, yet Georgia Tech’s undergraduate admission review is not based on a separately published CS admission track in the same way UT Austin reviews applicants for limited majors. A student admitted to Georgia Tech who intends to study CS still needs a very strong academic and technical profile, but is competing principally for admission to the Institute.

For a Texas resident, UT Austin CS can be the more unpredictable outcome: even a student with automatic admission may be placed in another major. For a non-Texas applicant, both are reaches, and Georgia Tech’s limited out-of-state enrollment can make it at least as difficult in practice. Treat UT Austin CS as a major-specific reach and Georgia Tech as a highly selective institutional admission, with residency being the biggest factor in comparing the two.
