The biggest practical difference is housing: San Diego rents, especially near UC San Diego in La Jolla and University City, are typically higher than comparable student housing near UT Austin, although both markets are expensive. UCSD students can partly offset that gap by living on campus or sharing an apartment farther from the coast, while UT students often look to West Campus, Riverside, North Campus, or neighborhoods reachable by bus.

Food and everyday purchases also tend to cost more in San Diego, particularly groceries, restaurant meals, and services. Austin is not a low-cost city, and West Campus convenience stores, restaurants, and newer apartment buildings can be pricey, but students commonly find more budget options than they would close to UCSD. In either city, cooking, sharing a multi-bedroom unit, and choosing a meal plan carefully make a much larger difference than small price differences between stores.

Transportation can narrow the gap depending on your habits. UCSD’s campus is served by the San Diego Trolley and regional buses, and many students can manage without a car; parking, insurance, and gas are substantial costs if they do drive. UT Austin is highly walkable and connected to CapMetro buses and rail, but Austin’s spread-out layout can make a car or frequent rideshares more tempting once students live farther from campus.

For most undergraduates paying their own living expenses, UT Austin will be the less expensive place to live overall, chiefly because rent is more manageable. UCSD can become closer in cost only with a favorable on-campus housing assignment, multiple roommates, and a car-free routine.
