Emory vs. Stanford: Which Is Better for a Career in Technology?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying computer science and eventually working in the technology industry. I’m comparing Emory and Stanford and want to understand how their academic environments and career networks differ for students pursuing technology careers.

For a student whose main goal is a traditional technology career in software engineering, product, AI, or startups, Stanford offers a substantially more direct path. Its computer science program sits within a large engineering ecosystem, and its location near Silicon Valley creates unusually frequent access to tech recruiters, founders, venture capital, internships, and alumni working across the industry. Stanford also makes it easier to combine CS with entrepreneurship through courses, student organizations, research labs, and startup-oriented programming.

Stanford tends to suit students who want to be surrounded by many peers intensely focused on building products, conducting technical research, or launching companies. The academic environment can be highly self-directed and fast-moving: there are abundant advanced CS options, but students benefit most when they actively pursue research, projects, internships, and relationships. For someone interested in cutting-edge areas such as AI, systems, robotics, or computer science research, the depth of the engineering community is a major advantage.

Emory can be an appealing choice for a student who wants computer science in a more intimate, liberal-arts-centered setting and sees technology as connected to another field. Its Atlanta location provides access to a growing business, healthcare, public health, and technology scene, while Emory’s strengths in health-related fields can be especially useful for interests such as health tech, data analytics, bioinformatics, or technology policy. Students can build strong faculty relationships and use Atlanta internships to develop experience.

The tradeoff is that Emory does not have Stanford’s scale of engineering offerings, embedded Silicon Valley network, or startup density. An Emory student aiming for major tech roles can absolutely get there, but will likely need to be more deliberate about technical coursework, personal projects, internships, coding interview preparation, and national recruiting.
