University of Florida Honors Program vs. ASU Barrett Honors College: Which Offers Better Overall Value?

With costs essentially equal, ASU’s Barrett Honors College offers the better overall value for most students who want an honors experience that is visible, structured, and consistently supported throughout college. Barrett functions as a college within ASU rather than simply a set of enriched classes, with dedicated honors advising, honors residential communities, priority registration, small seminar-style courses, and a required thesis or creative project. Those features make the benefits more tangible than at many large public-university honors programs.

Barrett’s advising is a particular advantage. Students work with honors-specific advisors while also using their major’s academic resources, which can be helpful for planning research, accelerated degrees, internships, and the thesis. The honors curriculum creates a smaller academic community inside a very large university, and the thesis gives students a substantial capstone they can point to in graduate-school, fellowship, or job applications. The tradeoff is that Barrett has real requirements, so it is best for someone willing to complete honors coursework and a major project.

UF’s Honors Program still has meaningful perks, including priority registration, honors courses, and access to the resources of a major research university. UF can be especially compelling for a student entering one of its particularly strong academic or professional areas and who expects to seek out research, faculty mentorship, and campus opportunities independently. Its honors experience is less centrally structured, however, so the value depends more on how proactively a student uses it.
