Is the University of Florida or NC State harder to get into for engineering?

The biggest practical difference is that UF’s freshman decision is primarily a university-level admission decision, while NC State evaluates applicants in the context of the College of Engineering and the engineering major they list. That makes NC State engineering especially competitive for applicants to high-demand fields and for students applying from outside North Carolina.

At UF, an intended engineering major does not function in quite the same way as admission to a separate undergraduate engineering school. Students are admitted to the university and then follow the coursework and progression requirements for their chosen engineering path. At NC State, applicants apply into an academic college, and the College of Engineering has a concentrated applicant pool with many students presenting advanced math and science preparation.

Residency can change the comparison substantially. A Florida resident may see UF as particularly difficult because of its broad statewide demand, while a North Carolina resident has an in-state advantage at NC State.

So, without anchoring the answer to a single year’s numbers, UF is typically the harder overall undergraduate admission, but NC State can be just as hard or harder specifically for engineering applicants, particularly nonresidents and applicants targeting high-demand engineering programs.
