Boston College vs. George Washington University: Which offers a better urban college experience?

George Washington University offers the more immersive urban college experience. Its Foggy Bottom campus sits in Washington, D.C. Students use the city as an extension of campus, and the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station makes other D.C. neighborhoods easy to reach without a car.

GW’s location also provides convenient access to internships and events during the academic year. The tradeoff is that GW feels less like a traditional enclosed college campus: academic buildings, residence halls, restaurants, offices, and city streets are closely interwoven.

Boston College has a beautiful, cohesive campus in Chestnut Hill, but it feels more residential and separated from downtown Boston. Students can take the MBTA Green Line from the BC area into Boston for concerts, sports, dining, internships, and cultural events, yet those outings require more planning and travel time than they do at GW. BC’s immediate surroundings are quieter and more suburban, giving daily student life a stronger campus-centered feel.

For someone who wants city life to be part of an ordinary weekday rather than a weekend destination, GW provides the clearer match. BC offers access to a major city, but its experience is closer to attending a traditional campus near Boston than living directly within Boston’s urban core.
