Does UC San Diego require supplemental essays for freshman applications?

I’m a current high school junior making my college list, and I’m trying to figure out how much extra writing each school needs.

I know the UC application has the Personal Insight Questions, but I’m confused about whether UC San Diego asks for any separate supplemental essays on top of that.

UC San Diego does not require separate supplemental essays for freshman applicants beyond the UC application itself.

If you apply to UC San Diego as a first-year student, you will complete the University of California application and answer 4 of the 8 Personal Insight Questions. Those PIQs are shared across all UC campuses, including UC San Diego.

So in practice, there is no extra UC San Diego-specific writing supplement the way some private colleges have school-specific essays.

If you are applying to multiple UC campuses, you only submit that one UC application, not separate essays for each campus.
