Which university is better for undergraduate journalism: Rice or Northwestern?

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialized journalism training and a large media-market network at Northwestern versus Rice’s smaller, highly residential liberal-arts environment in Houston, where journalism would be something you build alongside another major. Northwestern’s Medill School offers an undergraduate journalism degree with reporting, writing, editing, ethics, multimedia, and audience-focused coursework integrated into the curriculum. Its Evanston location also places students close to Chicago newsrooms, while Medill’s established alumni presence and experiential reporting opportunities create a clearer professional pipeline.

Rice does not offer a comparable stand-alone undergraduate journalism major. A Rice student can still gain meaningful experience through the Rice Thresher, campus publications, Houston-area internships, and coursework in fields such as English, political science, sociology, history, or visual and dramatic arts. That route can be especially appealing for someone who wants journalism grounded in a second academic specialty, such as science, public policy, business, or the arts. Houston is a major and diverse city with substantial reporting subjects and media opportunities, though students will need to be more proactive in shaping their journalism preparation.

For a student whose primary goal is to become a journalist and who wants structured undergraduate training, newsroom practice, and direct access to a nationally recognized journalism school, Northwestern is the stronger choice. Rice can be an excellent option when the student values its campus culture and wants to pair independent reporting experience with a broader or more interdisciplinary academic path.
