Which is better for independent study, Columbia or Brown?

Brown is the clearer choice for a student who wants to build an academic path around self-designed projects and interests beyond a prescribed curriculum. Its Open Curriculum eliminates a traditional core curriculum, leaving students to fulfill their concentration requirements while choosing broadly across the university. Brown also has a formal Independent Concentration option for students whose intended field does not fit an existing concentration.

Columbia offers meaningful independent-study and undergraduate-research opportunities, including faculty-supervised independent work and individualized interdisciplinary options such as a Special Concentration in Columbia College. Its research infrastructure and access to faculty in New York City can be excellent for a defined project. However, Columbia’s Core Curriculum requires substantial common coursework, so students have less room from the outset to shape the overall academic program around their own interests.

At either school, the quality of independent work will depend heavily on finding faculty mentors early and developing a project concrete enough for a professor to supervise. Brown’s curricular flexibility makes that process easier to integrate into all four years, rather than fitting it around a larger required core.
