Biology students often find it feasible to develop sustained mentoring relationships with a principal investigator or smaller research group, which matters for taking on independent projects and earning detailed recommendation letters.

For undergraduate biology research alone, Yale has a slight edge for a student who wants a more navigable path to close faculty mentorship and a sustained lab role. Columbia may be the more compelling choice for someone eager to use New York’s clinical, hospital, and cross-institutional research ecosystem, especially in human-health-focused fields.
