Is NYU or Stanford better for a career in venture capital?

I’m a high school senior interested in eventually working in venture capital, especially with technology startups. I’m deciding between NYU and Stanford and want to understand which school would generally provide stronger preparation and networking opportunities for that career path.

The biggest practical tradeoff is Stanford’s unusually deep connection to Silicon Valley’s founder and technology-investor network versus NYU’s day-to-day access to New York’s finance industry and a broad startup scene. For technology-focused venture capital, Stanford places you closer to founders, engineers, startup accelerators, and many early-stage firms, while NYU makes it easier to pursue semester-time internships with investors and finance-related employers in Manhattan.

Stanford has a particularly strong advantage for someone interested in backing software, AI, biotech, or other technology startups. Its alumni community is prominent across entrepreneurship and venture investing, and the campus culture makes it common to meet students building companies, technical collaborators, and people connected to early-stage investing. Stanford’s engineering strength also matters: many successful VC investors develop credibility by understanding products, markets, and technical founders, not only by studying finance.

NYU, especially through Stern, offers excellent preparation in finance, accounting, valuation, and markets, along with proximity to New York venture firms, growth-equity investors, banks, and startup operators. Being in the city can make part-time internships during the academic year more realistic, which is valuable for building an investing résumé early. NYU may be especially appealing if your interests include fintech, consumer companies, media, marketplaces, or later-stage investing that overlaps with finance.

For the specific goal of technology venture capital, Stanford would be the stronger choice because its entrepreneurial and technical ecosystem is more directly aligned with the people and companies that early-stage VCs evaluate. NYU is a compelling alternative when you prefer New York, want a more finance-centered undergraduate experience, or see yourself exploring investing roles beyond traditional early-stage tech VC.
