Is Boston University or the University of Wisconsin better for a journalism career?

Boston University is the more advantageous choice for most students aiming at a journalism career because its College of Communication places you in a major East Coast media market. BU offers dedicated undergraduate journalism coursework and hands-on outlets such as BUTV10, WTBU radio, The Daily Free Press, and the Boston University News Service.

Location matters in journalism because clips, editors, mentors, and repeat internship opportunities often grow from sustained local involvement. BU’s journalism students can build a portfolio across reporting, broadcast, audio, photojournalism, and social/digital formats while developing professional contacts in Boston, with additional access to the broader Northeast media corridor.

Wisconsin–Madison is still an excellent journalism path, especially for someone drawn to public-interest reporting, politics, local news, or multimedia storytelling. Its School of Journalism and Mass Communication has a respected curriculum, and students can gain substantial experience through The Daily Cardinal, The Badger Herald, WSUM, and campus media organizations. Madison also offers proximity to Wisconsin state government, which can be valuable for statehouse and policy reporting.

The meaningful practical question is cost. Journalism salaries can be modest early on, so a significantly lower net price at Wisconsin–Madison could outweigh BU’s location advantage. But at comparable cost, BU’s embedded access to a larger year-round media ecosystem gives it the clearer edge for launching a journalism career.
