Is UW–Madison or UCLA better for preparing for law school?

For a student who wants the widest range of law-related opportunities during college, UCLA has a modest edge over UW–Madison. Its location in Los Angeles creates unusually direct access to courts, public-interest organizations, government offices, entertainment and media law settings, and large legal employers. UCLA students can also pursue campus-based pre-law advising and connect with the nearby UCLA School of Law through events, speakers, and legal-interest organizations.

UW–Madison remains an excellent law-school foundation, particularly for someone interested in public policy, state government, legal history, or research. Madison is Wisconsin’s capital, so students can find meaningful opportunities connected to the state legislature, agencies, advocacy groups, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court, while the University of Wisconsin Law School provides a visible legal community on campus.

The most important admissions factors for law school will still be your undergraduate GPA, LSAT performance, strong writing and analytical skills, and sustained involvement outside class. Neither school offers a required “pre-law” track or a special admissions advantage simply because of its name. UCLA is the more opportunity-rich pick for broadly exploring legal careers, while UW–Madison can be especially compelling when its academic environment, cost, or state-government access would make it easier for you to earn excellent grades and build a focused record.
