Which is better for Washington, DC internships: Vanderbilt or Georgetown?

Georgetown provides stronger day-to-day access for Washington, DC internships in government, public policy, and nonprofit work. Its campus is in DC, so students can pursue internships during the academic year rather than needing to reserve them for a summer or a dedicated off-campus term. That proximity also makes informational interviews, evening events, Hill hearings, policy panels, and alumni networking much easier to incorporate into a normal week.

Georgetown’s academic and career ecosystem is closely connected to the city’s public-affairs institutions. Students interested in policy can draw on coursework and programming across areas such as government, international affairs, public policy, law, and business while seeking roles with congressional offices, federal agencies, think tanks, advocacy groups, and international nonprofits.

Vanderbilt can still be an excellent launch point for DC work, particularly through summer internships, alumni outreach, and structured opportunities that bring students to Washington. Its Nashville location, however, means most DC experience requires a planned summer, a specific program, or a temporary move. That can make it harder to build multiple consecutive internships in the city while taking regular classes.

For a student whose priority is sustained, hands-on involvement in DC throughout college, Georgetown has the practical advantage. Vanderbilt may be more compelling only if its particular academic programs, campus environment, or financial package matter enough that you are comfortable concentrating your DC internship search in summers and selected off-campus opportunities.
