Which has stronger school spirit, Northwestern or Ohio State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and intensity: Ohio State’s campus culture is built around a large, highly visible Buckeye identity, while Northwestern offers a smaller, more academically and city-oriented community where spirit exists but is less likely to shape an ordinary weekday. At Ohio State, school colors, campus traditions, student organizations, residence halls, and conversation around university events make affiliation feel unusually present beyond game days.

Ohio State’s location in Columbus also helps create an all-in-one college environment. Major traditions such as Script Ohio and the broader football culture are prominent, but the everyday effect is that many students follow teams, wear Ohio State gear, and treat campus-wide events as shared rituals. You do not need to be a dedicated sports fan to notice it.

Northwestern has meaningful pride around the Wildcats, especially during Big Ten competition, homecoming, and certain campus traditions, but its atmosphere is more fragmented. Evanston is less dominated by campus life than Ohio State’s Columbus setting, and many students spend time on academics, arts, research, internships, or in Chicago. The student body can feel close-knit, yet not uniformly spirited in the athletic or rallying sense.
