The biggest practical difference is proximity: Barnard puts you in Manhattan, so an internship, informational interview, or evening networking event can fit around a normal class schedule, while Yale students usually need to treat New York as a planned day trip or summer destination. Barnard students also benefit from access to Columbia’s campus, student organizations, and employer-facing programming, which expands their day-to-day exposure to New York-based industries.

For internships during the academic year, Barnard has a clear logistical advantage. You can realistically commute to roles in media, finance, nonprofits, arts, policy, tech, and other city sectors several times a week. Being physically present also makes it easier to accept last-minute invitations, build relationships through recurring events, and use professors, alumni, and classmates who are already active in the city.

Yale still offers substantial New York access. New Haven is connected to Manhattan by Metro-North service, and Yale has a large, influential alumni network in New York across many fields. Yale students regularly pursue New York summer internships, interviews, and occasional networking events; its career resources can support that process well. The limitation is convenience, especially for a part-time internship that expects in-person attendance during the semester.

For the specific goal of maximizing frequent, low-friction New York City internships and networking while enrolled, Barnard is the stronger option. Yale may be equally compelling for other academic, residential, or campus-life reasons, but Barnard’s Manhattan location creates a meaningful advantage for this priority.
