How does the residential college experience at WashU compare with Williams?

For a more consistently close-knit, all-four-years residential experience, Williams has the edge; WashU offers an energetic first-year community but a less unified residential identity after that.

Williams organizes first-year students into “entries,” small residential groups supported by Junior Advisors and connected to the broader residential life structure. That setup gives new students an immediate social unit without making the whole experience feel isolated from the rest of campus.

WashU’s South 40 is exceptionally active for first-years. Students live near one another, have easy access to dining, recreation, activities, and residential staff, and can quickly find friends through their floor, building, and campus programming. The scale is larger, though, and many students’ day-to-day networks become defined as much by majors, pre-professional interests, Greek life, clubs, and off-campus or apartment-style housing as by a continuing residential college affiliation.

Faculty access is likely to feel more personal and visible at Williams, where the small liberal-arts setting makes professors a central part of campus life and residential spaces are closely woven into the college community. WashU provides faculty and staff engagement through its residential programming and academic communities, but students often need to seek those relationships more intentionally within a larger research-university environment.
