How does Greek life at WashU compare with Penn State?

Penn State is the more Greek-life-centered choice. Its fraternity and sorority community is large, highly visible, and intertwined with major campus traditions, philanthropy, tailgating, and weekend social life. At Washington University in St. Louis, Greek organizations are present and active, but they represent a smaller share of students and are one option among many rather than the main organizing force of the social scene.

A student who wants Greek life to provide a broad social network, frequent chapter-based events, and a noticeable presence across campus will likely find Penn State more aligned with that experience. The larger State College setting and major football weekends also amplify the traditional big-university social atmosphere.

WashU may suit someone who wants to join a fraternity or sorority without having their entire social life revolve around it. Greek members there still have formals, philanthropy, recruitment, and chapter communities, but students commonly build social circles through residential communities, student organizations, academic programs, and the wider St. Louis area as well. The campus culture tends to feel more mixed: being unaffiliated does not put someone outside the usual social flow in the way it can at a more Greek-prominent school.

At either school, it is worth looking beyond the overall reputation and asking about the particular chapters you would consider.
