Harvard vs. NYU: Which offers a more traditional campus college experience?

Harvard offers the more traditional residential college experience. Its Cambridge campus has a recognizable physical center in Harvard Yard, where many first-year students live, attend classes, eat, and participate in campus traditions. After the first year, undergraduates are assigned to one of Harvard’s residential Houses, which provide dining halls, common spaces, advising, intramural communities, and a smaller social home within the university.

That House system makes residential life unusually central to Harvard’s undergraduate culture. Daily life is organized around a cohesive campus with walkable academic buildings, libraries, athletics, and student organizations nearby.

NYU is residential in the sense that many students live in university housing, but it feels much more like an urban university embedded in New York City. Its academic buildings, residence halls, and social spaces are distributed throughout Greenwich Village and lower Manhattan rather than contained within a conventional campus boundary.

At NYU, the city is part of everyday student life: students often study, eat, intern, attend events, and meet friends across different neighborhoods. That creates exceptional access to New York, but it also means the college experience can feel more independent, dispersed, and city-facing than Harvard’s campus-centered model.
