Harvard vs. Northwestern: Which Has a Stronger Residential Life Community?

Harvard has the stronger residential-life community for most students because its House system gives nearly every student a durable social home from sophomore year through graduation.

Harvard’s major differentiator is continuity. Students commonly remain connected to the same House for three years, eating there, attending House events, participating in Housing Day traditions, and meeting classmates across majors and class years. The system is not perfectly uniform, since some Houses have different locations and facilities, but the House name itself is a meaningful part of undergraduate identity in a way that residential affiliation is not at most universities.

Northwestern has lively residence halls and residential colleges, with close-knit smaller communities, themed programming, faculty involvement, and strong first- and second-year social life. Northwestern can be especially appealing for a student who wants a smaller, more intimate hall or residential-college environment early on. But for campus-wide traditions and a reliable, long-term residential group that follows students through graduation, Harvard’s House system is more deeply woven into everyday student life.
