Is Harvard or Northwestern better for getting internships?

Harvard has a modest edge for internship access overall because its alumni network and on-campus recruiting reach are especially broad across industries and cities. Its Boston/Cambridge setting also puts students near major employers in biotech, health care, startups, research, education, venture capital, and finance. Northwestern is highly competitive as well, particularly for opportunities connected to Chicago.

Harvard’s strongest differentiator is the scale and geographic reach of its alumni community. Students pursuing internships in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., California, or abroad can often find alumni connections in finance, technology, government, nonprofits, consulting, and entrepreneurship.

Northwestern’s practical advantage is Chicago. Evanston is closely connected to one of the country’s largest business centers, giving students access to internships during the academic year as well as over the summer. Chicago is especially productive for consulting, marketing, advertising, journalism, trading, corporate roles, health care, law-related work, and established Midwestern companies.

Recruiting at both schools is excellent, so the difference is not one of having opportunities versus lacking them. Harvard provides somewhat wider national and international leverage, while Northwestern can offer a more immediately accessible pipeline to Chicago employers. A student who actively uses career advising, alumni outreach, faculty connections, and early applications should be able to build a strong internship record at either institution.
