Is UIUC or Northwestern more prestigious for undergraduate business?

Northwestern carries the higher overall institutional prestige, but UIUC has the more established and visible undergraduate business program through Gies College of Business. Employers will recognize Northwestern as a highly selective private university, while Gies is widely respected as a large, well-resourced business school with particularly strong Midwest employer connections.

The biggest practical distinction is academic structure. UIUC offers a direct undergraduate business education in areas such as accountancy, finance, marketing, management, and information systems, with business-specific advising, student organizations, and recruiting. Its accountancy program in particular has a longstanding national reputation, and Gies graduates are well represented in accounting, consulting, corporate finance, and technology-related business roles.

Northwestern does not have a traditional undergraduate business major. Students interested in business commonly study economics at Weinberg, industrial engineering and management sciences at McCormick, or related fields, then use internships, clubs, and recruiting to pursue finance, consulting, startups, or management. Its strong university-wide reputation and access to Chicago can be especially valuable for highly selective consulting, finance, and entrepreneurial paths.

Northwestern’s name tends to signal broader academic selectivity, whereas UIUC signals a more formal undergraduate business education. Do not treat Northwestern’s Kellogg School reputation as an undergraduate business credential; Kellogg is a graduate business school.
