UIUC vs. Northwestern: Which college offers better access to Chicago internships?

The biggest practical difference is proximity: Northwestern students can commute from Evanston to Chicago for a regular part-time internship during the academic year, while UIUC students usually need to treat Chicago work as a summer, break, remote, or occasional travel opportunity. Northwestern’s Evanston campus is connected to the city by the CTA Purple Line and Metra, making downtown and many North Side offices reachable without a car. UIUC is in Champaign-Urbana, roughly a few hours from Chicago by train or bus, so a weekly in-person internship is far less convenient while taking a full course load.

Northwestern also has a natural advantage in campus-year recruiting and networking events with Chicago employers. Its location allows students to attend employer presentations, informational interviews, alumni events, and office visits more easily, and its Chicago campus presence can add another point of connection for some programs. For fields concentrated in the city, including consulting, finance, media, marketing, nonprofits, healthcare, and startups, that day-to-day access matters.

UIUC still has a very substantial Chicago alumni base and strong employer relationships, particularly in engineering, computer science, data, accounting, business, and other technical fields. Many Chicago employers recruit at UIUC, and its students regularly secure Chicago summer internships. The limitation is not whether UIUC students can get those roles; it is that they are less able to build a semester-long, in-person Chicago schedule or accept a short-notice networking opportunity. UIUC students often rely more heavily on organized recruiting, virtual interviews, career fairs, and summer hiring cycles.
