Which has better student transportation: UIUC or Michigan State?

UIUC’s buses are more deeply integrated into daily student life across campus and the surrounding Champaign-Urbana communities, while Michigan State’s CATA system is useful but MSU’s large, spread-out campus makes walking or biking especially important. At UIUC, eligible students can use Champaign-Urbana MTD buses with their i-card, and routes connect major campus areas, apartments, grocery stores, downtown Champaign, downtown Urbana, and transportation hubs. Michigan State students can ride CATA fixed-route buses with a valid MSU ID, including campus-serving and Lansing-area routes. CATA provides solid coverage of campus, nearby student housing, East Lansing, and key off-campus destinations. However, the size of MSU’s campus means that a bus trip can still involve a meaningful walk at one or both ends, particularly when traveling between distant academic buildings or residence halls.

For a student planning to live off campus or rely on transit for errands as well as class, UIUC has the edge. Michigan State is still manageable car-free, especially with a bike and a housing location near a CATA route, but UIUC offers the more seamless transit experience overall.
