What does UVA look for in out-of-state applicants?

I’m a junior trying to figure out how realistic UVA is for me as an out-of-state student. I know it’s probably more competitive for OOS applicants, so I’m trying to understand what they usually care about most when reviewing those applications.

I have solid grades and activities, but I’m not sure if UVA expects anything different or stronger from students applying from outside Virginia.

UVA is notably tougher for out-of-state applicants than for Virginia residents, so the main difference is usually the level of strength needed, not a completely different set of criteria.

For OOS applicants, UVA especially values a very strong academic record in the context of your school. That usually means taking the most challenging courses available to you and doing well in them over time. Strong grades matter more than any single other factor.

They also pay close attention to academic curiosity, intellectual seriousness, and how you use the opportunities around you. If your activities show real commitment, leadership, initiative, or impact, that helps. Depth usually reads better than a long list of unrelated clubs.

Your essays matter because they help UVA see fit. They tend to respond well to students who come across as thoughtful, engaged, self-aware, and genuinely excited about learning and contributing to a community. Clear, specific writing helps a lot.

If you’re test-optional, that can be fine, but if you have very strong scores, they can help reinforce your academic profile. Recommendations should also support the picture of you as an active, capable student who contributes in class and in your community.
