UIUC vs. University of Maryland: Which Campus Is Better for Students Without a Car?

UIUC is the more convenient campus for a student who expects to rely on public transportation for everyday life. Its Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District system is deeply integrated into campus, and UIUC students can ride MTD buses without paying a fare when they show their i-card. Frequent routes connect the major academic areas, residence halls, downtown Champaign, downtown Urbana, grocery stores, and other routine errands.

The biggest practical advantage is that MTD works as both a campus circulator and the area’s primary local transit network. You would not need to piece together a university shuttle, a county bus, and a rail system just to handle classes and shopping. UIUC is also very walkable and bike-friendly, so buses supplement rather than replace easy trips across campus.

Maryland has useful car-free options, including Shuttle-UM buses and the College Park–University of Maryland Metro station, which provides direct access toward Washington, D.C. That Metro connection is a meaningful advantage for internships, museums, airports, and off-campus weekends. However, the station is not at the center of every part of campus, and daily trips can involve more walking, shuttle timing, or transfers than they would at UIUC.

Maryland’s transit setup becomes especially appealing when regular access to D.C. matters as much as getting around campus.
