How does international student life compare at Georgetown University and the University of Amsterdam?

For an international student whose main priority is quickly finding peers with similar cross-cultural experiences, the University of Amsterdam is likely to feel more naturally international. Amsterdam has many English-taught programs and a city where using English in everyday life is common. Georgetown can offer a tighter campus community and more structured university support, but its overall social environment is more distinctly American.

At UvA, international students are woven into daily academic life rather than concentrated only in an international office or exchange cohort. Student associations, program-based groups, and the city’s international workforce can make it easier to meet people from many countries. The tradeoff is that UvA is more decentralized: students live throughout Amsterdam, and friendships often require more initiative outside class. Amsterdam’s difficult housing market can also be a major source of stress, particularly before arrival.

Georgetown’s residential campus, student organizations, and Office of Global Services create clearer built-in pathways for community and practical immigration guidance. Its Washington, DC location also offers international cultural communities, embassies, and globally oriented events. However, adapting may involve learning U.S. campus traditions, social norms, and a more American-centered student culture; students who arrive without an established group may need to be intentional about joining organizations early.

The distinction is less about whether either school welcomes international students and more about the kind of belonging each creates: UvA offers a broadly international urban environment, while Georgetown offers a more contained, relationship-driven campus experience with stronger institutional structure.
