Is Duke or the University of Washington better for access to a city?

For immediate, car-free access to a major city, the University of Washington is the clearer choice. Its Seattle campus sits next to the University District, with restaurants, cafes, bookstores, music venues, and everyday errands within walking distance. The Link light rail station by campus provides a direct connection to downtown Seattle and other city neighborhoods.

Students can reach museums, waterfront areas, major cultural events, and many Seattle-based internships without needing to own a car. The University District itself also feels urban: it is busy, dense, and built around student life rather than separated from it.

Duke has strong access to the Durham and broader Research Triangle area, but the campus experience is more self-contained. Downtown Durham is relatively close, yet it is not as naturally integrated into daily campus life as Seattle is for UW students; students often use rideshares, buses, bikes, or cars to get around. Duke students can access Durham restaurants, arts events, and internships, plus opportunities in nearby Raleigh and Chapel Hill, but those destinations require more planning.

For someone who wants city experiences to be part of an ordinary week rather than a deliberate outing, UW offers the more convenient urban setting. Duke’s advantage is access to multiple Triangle cities and a campus with more separation from urban bustle.
