Duke vs. Northwestern: Which University Typically Offers Better Need-Based Financial Aid?

I’m a high school senior comparing Duke and Northwestern, and my family will need substantial financial aid for me to attend. I’m trying to understand which school generally has the more generous need-based aid policies for students with similar financial circumstances.

The biggest practical difference is that Duke has a broader no-loan commitment for students with demonstrated need, while Northwestern also meets demonstrated need but may include a larger loan expectation for some families. Both institutions say they meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted undergraduates, so neither should be treated as a school that routinely leaves a calculated need gap.

Northwestern provides need-based grants, scholarships, work-study, and, depending on the family’s circumstances, loans. Northwestern can still be the less expensive option in an individual case, especially when its institutional formula determines a lower family contribution.

On policy alone, Duke typically has the more generous need-based framework for a wider range of low- and middle-income families because of its higher no-loan threshold. The deciding comparison should be each school’s net price calculator and final aid offer, since home equity, savings, business ownership, divorced-parent information, and sibling enrollment can produce meaningfully different results.
