Its Institute of Politics brings elected officials, campaign staff, journalists, and policy leaders to campus and supports practical political and public-service involvement. Harvard also offers deep coursework through Government, Economics, History, Social Studies, and related fields, while its alumni presence is exceptionally strong across Congress, federal agencies, think tanks, and administrations.

Duke is still an excellent route into government, and its Sanford School of Public Policy is a particularly tangible advantage for students who want policy training as undergraduates. Duke’s smaller undergraduate environment may also make faculty mentorship and leadership roles more accessible.

For a student whose priority is maximizing political and federal-government connections across many possible paths, Harvard has the edge. Duke may be more compelling when you specifically want an undergraduate public-policy program with close faculty engagement and structured policy experience.
