Duke vs. Fordham: Which college is better for a career in media?

The biggest practical difference is location: Fordham can put you in New York City internships, events, and part-time media work during the academic year, while Duke offers stronger national name recognition and broad university resources but is based in Durham. Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus is especially well positioned for this, though students at Rose Hill may need to commute into Manhattan.

Fordham has concrete media-facing opportunities, including WFUV public radio, student newspapers, and Communication and Media Studies coursework. Its New York setting is useful for internships across news, publishing, advertising, PR, digital content, and entertainment, and students can often continue a strong internship during the semester rather than limiting experience to summers.

Duke is not a weak media option. The Duke Chronicle, student broadcasting, and Duke’s extensive alumni network can provide excellent preparation, particularly for students who want rigorous writing, reporting, politics, public policy, or a broader liberal-arts foundation. Duke may also offer more flexibility to pair media interests with fields such as economics, computer science, or public policy, which can be valuable in digital media careers.

For launching into journalism, digital media, or entertainment immediately after college, Fordham has the more direct day-to-day career advantage because of New York access and its media ecosystem. Duke is the stronger choice if you value its overall academic environment and national network enough to pursue media internships primarily through summers, remote work, and intentional networking.
