How do undergraduate class sizes compare at UT Austin and Rice?

Rice will provide the more consistently small, discussion-based undergraduate classroom experience. Its undergraduate enrollment is far smaller than UT Austin’s, and many Rice courses, particularly beyond introductory requirements, are taught in seminar-sized sections. At UT Austin, students should expect more large lectures in the first year and in high-demand majors.

The difference is most noticeable in lower-division courses. At Rice, even introductory classes can feel relatively intimate, though popular STEM gateway courses may still use larger lectures, labs, or recitations. At UT Austin, introductory courses in fields such as business, computer science, economics, psychology, biology, and engineering can enroll hundreds of students; the smaller interaction often happens in discussion sections, labs, office hours, or later upper-division classes.

Rice’s residential college system also reinforces the small-school feel outside class. Students tend to see classmates and professors repeatedly through college events, research groups, and campus organizations, which can make it easier to participate and build academic relationships early.

UT Austin offers a much broader course catalog and more specialized sections, especially in large departments, but access to the smallest classes can depend heavily on major, registration timing, and whether a student is in an honors program.

For a student who learns best when regular classes themselves are small and conversational, Rice aligns more naturally with that preference. UT can still offer excellent close faculty contact, but it often requires more intentional use of honors courses, smaller upper-level electives, office hours, and research opportunities.
