Is UC San Diego or UC Santa Barbara harder to get into?

The practical difference is that UC San Diego tends to be more selective overall, while the gap can narrow or widen depending on the academic area you apply to. Both campuses use UC’s test-free review process and receive very large applicant pools, so grades, course rigor in the context of your school, and the quality of your activities matter far more than small distinctions between the two campuses. Neither should be treated as a likely admission for a strong applicant.

UCSD can be particularly difficult for capped and high-demand programs, especially computer science, engineering, data science, and some biological sciences pathways. Its college system does not change admissions selectivity in the way a separate school would, but your chosen major can matter when a program has limited capacity. Changing into certain capped majors after enrolling may also be difficult.

At UCSB, selectivity also differs by academic division. The College of Engineering is notably competitive, while admission to the College of Letters and Science is evaluated differently from engineering.

For an overall freshman applicant, UC San Diego is typically the harder of the two to enter. For a particular high-demand major, however, both can be similarly unpredictable, so applying to both is sensible rather than treating UCSB as a clear fallback.
