How do you answer "Tell me about yourself" in a college interview?

I have a college interview coming up soon, and I know this is one of the most common opening questions. I am a little stressed because I do not know how personal or formal my answer is supposed to be.

I want to give a strong answer that feels natural and still shows who I am as a student without sounding like I am just listing my resume.

It should sound conversational, not like a biography or a list of achievements.

Keep it personal, but not deeply private. You do not need to tell your whole life story. Think specific rather than broad. Instead of saying you are passionate about science, say you love environmental science because you became interested in local water quality testing or urban gardening.

Try something like: "I am a senior at Westfield High, and a lot of my time is split between robotics, tutoring in math, and playing piano. What ties those together for me is that I like solving problems and then explaining them in ways other people can use. Lately I have become especially interested in engineering that connects to sustainability, so I am excited to keep exploring that in college."

Avoid a long chronological story, a full resume recap, or an overly rehearsed speech. If it sounds polished but stiff, it can make the conversation harder. Practice enough that you know your main points, then say it naturally.
