University of Florida vs. Notre Dame: Which Offers Better Undergraduate Teaching?

For classroom learning and access to professors, Notre Dame is more likely to provide the stronger undergraduate teaching experience. Its smaller undergraduate population, residential campus structure, and private-university resources make discussion-based classes and faculty interaction more built into the standard student experience. Notre Dame also places substantial institutional emphasis on undergraduate education while maintaining significant research activity.

Class size is the clearest difference. At Notre Dame, many introductory courses can still be sizable, especially in popular STEM and business subjects, but students tend to move into smaller seminars and departmental courses relatively quickly. Faculty office hours, advising relationships, and research opportunities are typically easier to navigate because fewer undergraduates compete for the same attention.

The University of Florida offers excellent teaching in many departments, but its scale changes the experience. As a large public research university, UF has more big lecture courses, particularly during the first two years, and students often need to be proactive about building relationships with professors. Teaching assistants and graduate students may play a larger role in labs, discussions, and grading than they would at Notre Dame.

UF can match or surpass Notre Dame in particular areas, including programs with extensive research infrastructure, specialized course options, and professional pathways. Students in UF’s Honors Program, smaller majors, or research-intensive departments can create a very personal academic experience. But that experience usually requires more intentional course selection and initiative, whereas Notre Dame more consistently delivers close faculty contact across majors.
