Which undergraduate informatics program is stronger: Northeastern or the University of Washington?

For undergraduate informatics specifically, the University of Washington has the more established and recognizable program. UW offers a dedicated B.S. in Informatics through its Information School, with a curriculum intentionally built around technology, data, design, ethics, organizations, and human behavior rather than computer science alone.

UW is especially compelling for a student who wants to study how people use, shape, and are affected by digital systems. Northeastern is a strong choice for a student who wants a more career-integrated, customizable route into adjacent fields such as computer science, data science, cybersecurity, design, or cognitive psychology. Its defining advantage is the co-op system: students can build substantial professional experience through structured work placements while completing their degree. That can be particularly valuable for someone who learns best through applied work and wants to test different roles in technology early.

Northeastern is not as centered on a single undergraduate Informatics program in the way UW is. For the stated interest in the intersection of technology, data, and people, UW’s Informatics major is the clearer academic match. Northeastern may be more appealing when co-op access and a customized combination of technical and applied study matter more than having “Informatics” as the core degree.
