Northeastern vs. Drexel: Which Has a More Urban Campus Experience?

Drexel offers the more urban, city-integrated daily experience. Its University City campus is woven into Philadelphia’s street grid, with academic buildings, apartments, restaurants, transit stops, Penn’s campus, hospitals, and commercial corridors closely intermingled. Students routinely move through regular city blocks rather than staying within a clearly separated campus footprint.

Drexel’s location also makes the wider city immediately accessible. SEPTA stations and trolley lines are nearby, 30th Street Station is within walking distance, and Center City is a short trip or a longer walk across the Schuylkill River. University City has a substantial student population, but it still feels like an active Philadelphia neighborhood rather than a self-contained college enclave.

Northeastern is unquestionably urban: it sits in central Boston, borders the Fenway and Back Bay areas, and has direct access to the MBTA’s Green and Orange Lines. Its co-op culture also sends many students into Boston workplaces throughout the year, creating a strong practical connection to the city.

However, Northeastern’s central campus has more of a defined, landscaped, pedestrian-oriented boundary. Once inside, it can feel like a compact university setting embedded in Boston, with many student routines centered on campus buildings, residence halls, and nearby Huntington Avenue. Boston is very present, but the transition from campus to city is more noticeable than at Drexel.

For someone prioritizing the sensation of living amid a working city every day, Drexel’s streetscape and University City setting create the more continuous urban experience.
