Is Northwestern or Duke better for undergraduate engineering research?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Northwestern and Duke for engineering, and research opportunities are one of my biggest priorities. I’m especially interested in how accessible faculty research is to undergraduates and how much hands-on involvement students typically get.

For a student whose top priority is joining an engineering lab early and having many nearby research directions to explore, Northwestern has a slight edge. Duke’s culture tends to make it natural to combine engineering research with medicine, entrepreneurship, policy, or service-oriented projects, rather than treating the lab as a separate academic activity.

At either school, hands-on responsibility is not automatic in the first semester. Students who contact several faculty members with specific interests, can commit consistent weekly time, and remain in a lab beyond one term are most likely to move from routine tasks to designing experiments, analyzing data, or contributing to publications.
