Is Northwestern worth the extra cost compared with Boston College?

The biggest practical tradeoff is whether Northwestern’s broader university resources, Chicago-area access, and flexibility across highly selective programs are worth taking on meaningfully more family strain or debt than Boston College. Northwestern offers unusually deep opportunities in research, engineering, journalism, communications, the arts, and interdisciplinary study, while Boston College provides a more contained, undergraduate-centered Jesuit environment with especially strong pathways in business, economics, finance, and the liberal arts.

Northwestern can justify a moderate price difference when a student expects to use opportunities that are distinctly stronger there: switching among fields, pursuing intensive research, combining a technical field with journalism or music, or seeking regular access to internships and cultural institutions in the Chicago area. Its quarter system also lets students take more courses, though the faster pace is not ideal for everyone.

Boston College is not a lesser outcome simply because it costs less. Its Carroll School of Management, Boston location, close alumni culture, and strong advising can be especially valuable for careers in finance, consulting, education, health care, and nonprofit work. A lower cost can also give a student more freedom to take an unpaid internship, study abroad, attend graduate school, or choose a first job for fit rather than salary.

The extra cost is not worth it if it requires substantial private loans, major parent borrowing, or debt that would limit graduate-school plans. If the difference is affordable without that pressure and Northwestern clearly fits the student’s intended academic direction better, it is reasonable to choose Northwestern. Otherwise, Boston College is a high-value choice, and saving the money is likely the wiser decision.
