How do I choose the right college major if I’m interested in multiple subjects?

I’m a high school junior starting to look at colleges, and I keep getting stuck on the major question. I like a few different subjects and I can honestly see myself studying more than one of them, so I’m not sure how people actually narrow it down.

I’m trying to figure out what I should base that decision on before I apply, especially since some colleges want you to choose a major early.

You do not need to have this fully figured out before applying. A lot of students start college interested in several areas, and at many colleges you can apply undecided or change majors later.

The best way to narrow it down is to compare your interests in a more practical way. Ask yourself which subjects you enjoy learning about even when no grade is attached, which classes make time go by quickly, and which topics you would still want to study at an advanced level rather than just casually.

It also helps to separate “I like this class” from “I want this as a major.” You might love psychology, economics, and English, for example, but the real question is whether you want the kind of reading, writing, lab work, math, research, or discussion each major actually requires.

When building your college list, check three things for each school: how easy it is to switch majors, whether students can double major or minor, and whether admission is by college or by specific major. At some schools, switching into engineering, business, nursing, or computer science is difficult, so if one of your interests is in a more restricted major, you may want to apply directly to it.

A useful approach is to pick one “best current fit” major for applications, not a forever decision. Choose the area that combines strongest interest, strongest academic record, and the most flexibility if you later pivot.
