Which offers better undergraduate research opportunities, CMU or Tufts?

The biggest practical difference is research intensity and specialization: Carnegie Mellon places undergraduates inside a highly research-driven technical environment, while Tufts can offer a somewhat more personal, cross-disciplinary path to faculty-led work. At CMU, opportunities are especially abundant in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, engineering, human-computer interaction, statistics, and related quantitative fields. Tufts has substantial undergraduate research access as well, with particular strengths across life sciences, biomedical areas, engineering, psychology, environmental studies, and international or policy-oriented work.

At CMU, many professors run large, active labs connected to major research centers, and students who build relevant skills can join projects early, sometimes beginning with course-based research, independent study, or lab assistant roles. The tradeoff is that popular labs can be competitive, and first-year students may need to demonstrate preparation before taking on central research responsibilities.

Tufts’ smaller undergraduate focus can make faculty contact feel more direct, particularly in departments where professors supervise undergraduates closely. Its summer research programs and departmental opportunities make it possible to pursue independent projects or work in faculty labs, and students interested in combining fields may find the university’s flexible academic culture useful. Research volume and lab scale in highly technical areas may be less extensive than at CMU, but access can be excellent for proactive students who form relationships with professors.
