Should I choose Carnegie Mellon or Cornell for undergraduate research opportunities?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Carnegie Mellon and Cornell, and I’m especially interested in getting involved in research as an undergraduate. I want to understand which school generally offers stronger access to faculty projects and meaningful research opportunities for students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth in a concentrated, project-driven technical environment at Carnegie Mellon versus the much broader range of research fields and laboratories at Cornell. Carnegie Mellon can make it especially easy to build sustained relationships within computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, machine learning, and related engineering areas. Cornell offers substantial undergraduate research access too, but its larger university structure means finding the right lab may require more self-directed outreach.

At Carnegie Mellon, undergraduates often encounter faculty-led work through small departments, advanced project courses, research assistant openings, and summer research programs. For a student whose interests are clearly in computing or technology, the density of active labs and interdisciplinary centers can be a real advantage. The culture also tends to reward building things, so research may connect naturally to prototypes, software, robotics systems, or applied collaborations.

Cornell’s advantage is scope. Beyond strong engineering and computing research, it has unusually deep opportunities in life sciences, agriculture and environmental science, architecture, social sciences, humanities, public policy, and the sciences. Its multiple undergraduate colleges create many distinct research pathways, and its large faculty community can be valuable for students whose interests may change or combine fields, such as computational biology, climate technology, materials science, or economics.

Neither school automatically hands every first-year student a lab position; at both, the students who read faculty work carefully, send tailored outreach emails, and begin with manageable tasks tend to gain access fastest. Cornell may offer more total options, while Carnegie Mellon may offer a more tightly connected path within technical research.

For undergraduate research alone, choose Carnegie Mellon if you already want an intensive computing, robotics, AI, or HCI research experience. Choose Cornell if you want comparable technical possibilities alongside greater freedom to explore research across many other disciplines.
